French bulldog breed comes in a wide variety of colors. Besides we can find them in approved AKC colors, they also come in some of the most amazing rare shades of blue, lilac, and merle. These unusual Frenchie colors are often higher in price because of the inherited dilute genes. Since I frequently get asked do French bulldogs change colors as they age, I decided to relieve this topic.
You’re probably familiar with the fact that dilute genes spontaneously occur in dogs. Therefore, it means that breeders need to select the dogs for mating. When a puppy is accidentally born with a dilute gene, a breeder can use it for further mating to produce rare-colored Frenchies. However, the puppy also requires to pass through many health checks.
Do rare-colored French bulldogs change color?
Blue french bulldogs are a grayish color due to a dilute of pigment in the black hair of the dog. It means that the gene is recessive. It does not necessarily mean it has a weak genetic. In science, there is a difference between correlation and causation. A century ago, blue dogs had skin problems and infections due to recessive genetics. Nowadays, you can find strong genetic recessive gene dogs, i.e.: even fawns, creams, platinum (light hair, light-eyed), blues, chocolates, and lilacs are considered recessive but overtime, breeders have created stronger genetics and will continue to build stronger genetics with proper education. That’s why I highly advise you to buy French bulldog puppies only from reputable breeders.
Unlike grey poodles that are capable of changing their color from black to grey completely, Frenchie puppies don’t change their color much. For example, when blue puppies are born, they may look black at first. However, over several weeks, they develop a visible blue hue.
When we talk about other unusual French bulldog colors and do they change the color, the answer is both yes and no. For example, Isabella French bulldog puppies may vary from almost platinum lilac to chocolate Isabella. Therefore, in the first weeks of life, it’s quite difficult to guess what color will be the puppy in the future.
Do cream and white French bulldog puppies change color?
Cream at white French bulldog puppies may look the same at first sight. That’s why you need to know the difference between these two colors. If we compare white Frenchies with cream ones, we can notice that white pooches have pink eye-rims. On the other hand, cream French bulldogs have more like dusky eye-rims and darker lips. As they age, cream French bulldogs develop egg-shell sort of color, while white Frenchies keep the same coloration.
Do French bulldog eyes change color?
Even though all newborn French bulldogs have gorgeous blue eyes when they are born, the bad news is that most of them don’t stay blue.
In case you own a fawn, cream, or any other accepted color of Frenchie, their eye color changes when they are approximately ten weeks old. Just like in human babies, Frenchie puppies also change eye colors from blue to brown. The only exception happens in case you own a rare-colored Frenchie such as Isabella, merle, blue, or lilac.
