French bulldog hot and cold weather: mood changes in the dog

Brachycephalic breeds are on a higher tendency to become moody due to weather changes because they best suit mild temperatures.

Spring and autumn are seasons when they can enjoy spending more time outside without behavioral changes. Due to their short snouts, Frenchies, Pugs, and other flat-faced dogs are unable to regulate their body temperatures. Another reason can be found in their short coats that make them prone to easier catch cold during winter. That’s why French bulldogs along with other brachycephalic skulled dogs, require wearing clothes.

French Bulldog in Hot Weather Behavior

It’s common to see that your Frenchie slows down in hot weather. For you, it can be the best time of the year, but for your little gremlin, it can be a real-life struggle. It’s the time when he would like to find a shady spot in your yard or to sleep in an air-conditioned room.

Therefore, special attention should be paid to your dog’s hydrating demands. Escape going out in the hottest part of the day is also essential in order to keep your pet from heatstroke.

In case you own a Frenchie, you should also consider buying summer-cooling items such as a self-cooling dog collar, dog cooling vest and other summer essentials. Knowing the signs of heatstroke in dogs is important, as well as quick reacting in case of occurrence some of the following symptoms: dizziness, lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, loss of consciousness, hot and dry dog’s nose, constant sleeping…

There are even studies that have shown that some dogs tend to show aggressive behavior due to changes in weather. There has been found a large number of dog bites to strangers and other dogs. However, in my 20-years-long cooperation with the French bulldog breed, I’ve never experienced such a situation. Since they are known as one of the best family dogs and the friendliest breeds, I can’t imagine that a Frenchie reacts for no reason like that.

Can French Bulldogs Smell the Bad Weather Coming?

Thanks to their strong senses, our dogs can smell the weather changes when almost no one can. Besides they have a powerful sense of hearing, canines can also feel the changes in the static electric field. Therefore, if you see your Frenchie is searching to find a confined place to hide, such as under the table or behind the bed, then there’s probably something going on in the atmosphere!

French Bulldog and Cold Weather

You might have noticed that French bulldogs tend to sleep more during winter months. Unlike dogs with long hairs such as Huskies or Samoyeds, Frenchies and other small breeds would rather curl up on the couch than go out for a stroll. Therefore, you shouldn’t be surprised by such behavior. Help your pooch to warm up by buying dog sweaters, jackets and booties to protect his tiny body parts. Every Frenchie will be grateful to have those items in his closet. It’s not the thing of fashion, it’s the thing of his life.

This dog breed can’t sustain walking outside in harsh weather if it doesn’t wear protective clothing. Therefore, warm up your little four-legged friend before you go outside. Shorten your walks to max 5 min and go outside only when it’s the time to go to the toilet.

Place your French bulldog’s bed in the warmest place in the house where he can feel safe and warm. In case you think your little gremlin requires wearing pajamas at night, it would be a great idea to dress him in good cotton onesies.
