Summer is the time when not only you but also your dog deserves to get a tasty and refreshing snack. Since dogs can’t eat ice cream as we can, the best choice is to reward them with fruits and veggies they can eat. That’s why I wanted to provide you with the tastiest healthy snacks to share with your Frenchie during summer.
1. Watermelon
If you were wondering if the watermelon is good for dogs, the answer is YES! This tasty vegetable (not fruit) contains more than 90% of water which is actually great for keeping your Frenchie hydrated during summer. Dogs get thrilled by eating watermelon on a hot summer day especially if it’s served cold. However, you need to make sure you’ve removed all the seeds because they can cause digestive issues.
2. Cucumbers
Another refreshing veggie that needs to become a part of your dog’s nutrition is a cucumber. It’s rich in potassium, fiber, and magnesium that is actually great for keeping your dog’s muscles in shape. It also contains 95 % of water and doesn’t contain sugar, so it’s definitely a good pick for obese pooches.
3. Pumpkin
A great thing about pumpkin is that you can serve it baked or boiled. Giving a raw pumpkin is not recommended, and seeds and skin also need to be removed. Since it’s rich in fiber, it’s great for French bulldogs that suffer from constipation. Pumpkin is also rich in beta carotene, iron and zinc, so it also improves the health of your four-legged friend’s skin.
4. Celery
Did you know that celery can boost your Frenchie’s immune system and make him less prone to health issues? Besides it’s low in calories, it’s also high in vitamins C, A and B.
5. Carrots
Carrots are known as the veggie that improves our sense of vision and quality of the skin. There’s no dog that should not be allowed to eat carrots, so I advise every French bulldog owner to use it both fresh or boiled for preparing their dog’s meals.
6. Apples
How can we forget good and old apples? This powerful fruit is especially great for senior Frenchies because it’s low in fats and calories. It’s also rich in vitamins C and A. The only precaution is that you need to remove the seeds because they are rich in cyanide that is actually very poisonous. Removing the skin is also advisable because of pesticides.
7. Blueberries
Here is another magical antioxidant that you Frenchie must eat! Blueberries are powerful fruits that fight cancer, allergies and are famous for their skin healing effects. Try frozen blueberries for preparing a refreshing snacks for your dog.
8. Cantaloupe
Cantaloupe not only smells great, but it is also the best to serve cold in summer. Since it’s high in water and low in calories, it’s good to be given to Frenchies that are prone to obesity.
9. Yogurt
You can use yogurt to make a meal for your dog more attractive to eat. Dogs love this drink especially because it acts like probiotic. When buying yogurt for your Frenchie, I advise you to find the one that is free of xylitol, artificial sweeteners, and lactose. Note that some Frenchies can show flatulence, gases, and diarrhea by eating dairy products. Therefore, I recommend you to check with your vet first whether to include this ingredient into your dog’s diet.
10. Peanut butter
Dogs simply adore eating peanut butter! You can fill your Frenchie’s interactive toys with it or serve it with some tasty fruits or veggies. It presents a great source of protein, niacin, and different vitamins. However, you need to be careful not to give your dog too much peanut butter because it may lead to obesity.
Wrapping up
When feeding a French bulldog with fruits, it’s very important not to include them too often. Since they are rich in sugar, you need to take care of your dog’s level of blood sugar. Vets usually recommend that fruits should not exceed 5-10 % of your dog’s diet. Other concerns to take into account is that eating too many fruits can cause runny stools.
